Building Skills for Success: Social-Emotional Learning at Summer Camp

July 31, 2026

This summer, students at camp had the opportunity to strengthen important social and emotional skills through weekly Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons designed and led by Sutton teacher Makenzie Murray. These lessons helped students develop strategies they can use both in and out of the classroom to better understand their emotions, communicate with others, and navigate everyday challenges.

Throughout the summer, students explored what SEL means and why these skills are an important part of learning and growing. They practiced identifying different emotions, recognizing how feelings can affect their actions, and learning tools that can help them manage big feelings and stay focused.

A key part of the SEL lessons focused on the Zones of Regulation. Students learned what each zone represents, which emotions may fit within each zone, and how different strategies and tools can help them move toward or maintain a regulated state. Through discussions and activities, students built awareness of their own emotions and practiced choosing strategies that support their well-being.

Students also spent time developing conflict-resolution skills. They explored healthy ways to handle disagreements, practiced effective communication strategies, and learned how problem-solving and understanding others’ perspectives can help resolve conflicts.

Another important focus was helping students recognize and respond to their own needs. Students learned to listen to the signals their bodies send them, identify what those signals might mean, and choose tools or strategies that can help them feel ready to participate and be successful throughout the day.

At the end of each SEL class, students participated in hands-on SEL stations that gave them opportunities to practice these skills in meaningful ways. Activities included coloring exercises, cooperative games, and guided conversations with staff who helped support discussions about feelings, disagreements, and conflict resolution. Students also explored a variety of regulation tools and practiced understanding when and how to use them appropriately.

The goal of the SEL program was to help students build confidence, self-awareness, and a personal toolbox of strategies they can continue using at home, at school, and in everyday life. These skills provide a strong foundation for positive relationships, effective communication, and lifelong emotional growth.

All SEL supplies used throughout the summer were funded through the Vermont Afterschool grant, which helped make these learning opportunities possible for students.
