KESD Summer Camp: Turning Summer Into Reading Success
April 7, 2026
What if summer break could actually accelerate learning instead of slowing it down? Our Spring/Fall 2025 iReady reading data highlights a clear trend: students who participated in summer camp showed stronger reading outcomes than those who did not attend. The results demonstrate how continued learning over the summer can positively impact student proficiency.
Strong Gains in Early Grades (K–4) &
Continued Benefits for Middle Grades (5–8)

Among younger learners, the impact of summer camp participation is especially striking. Nearly 79.23% of K–4 students who attended summer camp maintained or improved their reading proficiency from spring to fall. In comparison, only 64.81% of students who did not attend camp achieved the same progress.
This gap of over 14% shows us that structured summer learning opportunities help prevent the typical “summer slide” and instead promote growth.
Continued Benefits for Middle Grades (5–8)
This trend continues with older students. 75.15% of students in grade 5-8 who attended summer camp maintained or gained reading proficiency, compared to 68.46% of their peers who did not attend.
Additionally, 87.8% of grade 5–8 summer camp participants maintained or improved their reading performance, with over 80% demonstrating measurable growth per iReady from spring to fall.
Why Summer Camp Matters
These results reinforce what educators have long believed: consistent engagement is key to academic success. Summer camp programs provide:
- Targeted reading support
- Structured learning time
- Opportunities for practice and reinforcement
- A positive, engaging environment that keeps students motivated
Rather than losing ground over the summer, students who attended Kingdom East Summer Camp returned to school ready to build on their progress.
A Clear Takeaway
The data tells a compelling story; students who attended Kingdom East Summer Camp outperformed their peers in reading proficiency gains across all grade levels measured.
For families and educators alike, this highlights the value of investing in summer learning programs. When students stay connected to learning year-round, the results speak for themselves.
As districts continue to explore ways to support student success, Kingdom East’s summer camp model stands out as a powerful example of how to turn summer into a season of growth.
