The passing of Tony DeMasi leaves a profound void in the hearts of many, particularly within the Kingdom East School District (KESD) and the Burke community. Tony was a man whose presence, dedication, and genuine warmth touched countless lives. KESD extends its deepest condolences to his family, forever grateful for his service, commitment, and dedication.

For many years, the start of the school day at Burke Town School was marked by Tony’s unwavering presence. Coffee in hand, he would make his way around the school, his smile brightening even the coldest Vermont mornings. He greeted students and families with a consistent warmth, asking about their lives and offering support. It was a daily ritual, a testament to his constant, positive presence that welcomed children to school.

Tony's dedication extended far beyond morning greetings. He was an integral part of the school community for decades, working 22 years as a school board member serving the Burke Town School, Caledonia North Central Supervisory Union and KESD. He was known for his thoughtful insights, translating complex issues into simple, memorable perspectives. He believed deeply in investing in children's futures, famously stating that despite years of taxes, he hadn't yet paid his "full share" for the education of his three children.

His commitment to the schools was evident in his hands-on approach to facility oversight. He was often found in boiler rooms, understanding the intricacies of each school's infrastructure. He regularly drove to Lyndon in all weather, arriving early to meetings, reviewing and signing warrants and invoices, demonstrating his steadfast support for the education system. He served in various capacities, including chair, vice chair, and union negotiator, always listening intently to public comment and appreciating feedback . Tony also prioritized equity among schools, championing the needs of hands-on learners and the underserved.

Beyond his official roles, Tony was a kind and generous man. He found joy in simple pleasures, like driving to the West End Market in Newport for his favorite doughnut. His passion for the schools was evident even in his final days, as he was ready to join another board to continue fighting against state redistricting discussions.

Tony DeMasi was a humble and dedicated individual, always ready for a chuckle. His tireless work on behalf of the children of Burke and KESD will be missed across our community. His ability to connect with people, his consistent and caring presence, and the lasting mark he left on all who knew him will be long remembered.  He leaves behind a legacy of connection, constancy, and profound impact. Tony will be deeply missed, but his warmth, passion, perspective, and friendship will always be remembered.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7p this Thursday, August 14th at the Guibord-Pearsons Funeral Home on 15 Main Street in Lyndonville. Memories and condolences can be shared at guibordfh.com
