Sutton School Student McKenzie Carpenter Hooks First Place in Vermont Fish Art Contest
April 8, 2026
Creativity, curiosity, and a love for Vermont’s natural world came together in an inspiring way this year, and one KESD student rose to the top. McKenzie Carpenter of Sutton School has earned first place in the Grades 4–6 division of the 2026 Art of Conservation Fish Art Contest, a statewide competition that blends art, science, and environmental awareness.
Hosted in partnership with the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Wildlife Forever, the contest invites students across the state to explore aquatic life by creating detailed illustrations of fish species found in Vermont waters, paired with a written essay that reflects their understanding of the species and its habitat.
A Creative Connection to Nature
McKenzie’s winning artwork focused on the yellow perch, a fish commonly found in Vermont’s lakes and ponds. Through both artistic expression and research, participants like McKenzie deepen their connection to the natural environment while developing skills across multiple subjects—including science, writing, and visual arts.
This year’s contest saw an impressive 337 student submissions from across Vermont, highlighting just how impactful and engaging this program has become in classrooms and communities statewide.
More Than Just an Art Contest
The Fish Art Contest is about more than creating beautiful images—it’s about fostering environmental stewardship in the next generation. By studying fish species and their ecosystems, students gain a deeper appreciation for Vermont’s waterways and the importance of conservation.
As part of her achievement, McKenzie will receive a fishing rod and reel, and her artwork will move on to the next stage of judging, with the possibility of being featured in the state’s 2027 Fishing Guide and Regulations publication.
A Proud Moment for Sutton School
McKenzie’s accomplishment is a proud moment for Sutton School and a testament to the talent and dedication of young artists in the community. Her success reflects not only artistic skill but also a thoughtful engagement with the natural world.
Congratulations, McKenzie, on this outstanding achievement! Your work is an inspiration, and we can’t wait to see where your creativity takes you next.
