Last summer, our Summer Camp introduced a new approach to literacy instruction by having certified KESD teachers work with small groups of students to provide targeted reading lessons. The results were exciting. When students returned to school in the fall, 80% of campers maintained or improved their reading skills.

This summer, we brought that same successful model to math. Throughout camp, certified KESD teachers led engaging lessons that helped students build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and discover that math can be both meaningful and fun.

Elementary Math in Action

Students in grades 1 through 4 participated in lessons that followed a familiar routine with warm ups, mini lessons, and hands on choice stations. Each week introduced a new area of math, including Geometry, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Operations and Algebraic Thinking.

Along the way, students practiced skip counting, strengthened their multiplication skills, and learned new strategies for solving multi step word problems. They stayed engaged by working together, exploring different activities, and building their confidence with every lesson.

Elementary math instruction was led by certified KESD teachers Becky Lawson from Lunenburg and Jackie Cote from Miller's Run, who created an encouraging environment where students were excited to learn each day.

Building Strong Math Skills in the Upper Grades

Middle school math instruction was led by LTS teacher Bob Herrmann, who tailored lessons to meet the needs of each grade level.

Fifth grade students focused on strengthening multiplication and division while also exploring patterns, predictions, and estimation. Sixth grade students expanded their understanding of rates, averages, estimation, and predictions. Students in grades 7 and 8 took a deeper dive into rates, ratios, averages, and data analysis, giving them valuable tools for solving real world problems.

Supporting Student Success

All of the math materials and supplies used during camp were purchased through the Vermont Afterschool Grant, making it possible to provide students with engaging, hands on learning experiences throughout the summer.

Summer Camp continues to be a place where students can strengthen important academic skills while enjoying the excitement of learning with their peers. We are proud of the hard work our campers put in this summer and look forward to seeing the confidence and skills they bring with them into the new school year.
