This summer, students at KESD Summer Camp enjoyed another successful Humanities Camp, a special collaboration between Vermont Humanities and KESD Summer Camp.

Each year, Vermont Humanities awards KESD a grant that helps make Humanities Camp possible by providing funding for program materials. This summer, we were also fortunate to receive a generous donation of more than $800 from the Burklyn Arts Council, which covered the cost of all the art supplies used throughout the program. We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of these community partners, whose generosity provides enriching experiences for our students.

Throughout the summer, one elementary class each day spent the day participating in Humanities Camp. Burke Town School teachers Chrissy Park, Lisa Reed, and Carol Mason led engaging activities that blended art, creativity, and hands on learning while encouraging students to explore new skills.

Students experimented with a variety of artistic techniques using professional art materials, including drawing pencils, charcoal, and artist pastels. As they created their artwork, they learned important artistic concepts such as scale, shading, and texture.

First grade students explored collage and wet felting, discovering new ways to work with different materials and textures. Students in grades 2 through 4 learned foundational sewing skills, including how to thread a needle, tie beginning and ending knots, and practice both the straight stitch and blanket stitch. Many proudly completed their own miniature stuffed animals, showcasing both their creativity and their growing confidence with a new skill.

Humanities Camp continues to be a highlight of the summer, giving students the opportunity to explore new artistic techniques, build confidence through creative projects, and discover the joy of making something with their own hands.
